On a typical walkthrough we're checking:
- Lean, root plate and soil heave — the things that decide whether a tree is a hazard or just tall
- Unions and co-dominant stems that split, and whether bracing and cabling could hold them
- Dead, diseased or storm-torn wood in the canopy that needs to come out before it comes down on its own
- Access for the truck and the chipper, and which root zones we'll need to keep equipment off
- Permit questions — street trees in the right-of-way need one, and some neighborhoods have their own rules. We check that for you as part of the estimate.
- What the job actually costs, in writing, before anyone starts a saw

We won't top your tree, and we won't promise to save it
Two things you'll hear from us that you won't hear everywhere. First: we don't top trees. Topping produces weakly attached regrowth that fails in the next storm and shortens the tree's life — if a tree genuinely needs to come down, we'll say so instead of butchering it. Second: no honest arborist guarantees a tree. Cabling and bracing dramatically reduce the risk of a union failing; they don't make a tree immortal, and we'll tell you the odds as we see them.
Timing matters too. For most species in Michigan, late winter — February into March — is the right window for structural pruning. Oaks should only be pruned in dormancy, because cutting them in the growing season invites oak wilt. If your consultation lands in July and the work can wait, we'll tell you to wait.
