Ground 6-12 inches below grade, backfilled and replant-ready
A stump left in the ground is three problems at once: something to catch a mower blade on, something to trip over in the dark, and a soft, damp home for carpenter ants and termites that would rather be in your house. Grinding solves all three. We bring the machine in, chase the stump and the big surface roots down below the level of your lawn, and keep going until there's nothing left to sprout.
Standard depth is 6 to 12 inches below grade — enough for sod, seed or a new bed. If you're putting in a fence post, a patio footing or a replacement tree in the same hole, say so and we'll grind deeper. We'd rather hear it before the machine comes off the trailer than after.
When we're done, the hole gets backfilled with the chips the grinder just made, so the spot sits level instead of sinking into a crater over the next year. Want the chips gone instead? We'll haul them. Want them piled by the garden as mulch? That works too — just tell the crew where.
